First known portraits:
Robert Cornelius 1839 Hippolyte Bayard 1840
Robert Cornelius's self portrait.
Robert Cornelius was the American photographer and pioneer in the history of photography. His self image take in 1839 is the first known photographic portrait of a human taken in the United States. He operated two of the earliest photography studios in the United States between 1841 and 1843 and implemented innovative techniques to significantly reduce the exposure time required for portraits.
Hippolyte Bayard's self portrait.
Hippolyte Bayard was the french photographer and pioneer in the history of photography. He invented his own process that produced direct positive paper prints in the camera and presented the world's first public exhibition of photographs on 24th June 1839.
The similarities between these photos are both of two photos nearly have the same tone. The colour in both of the photos are the same, which is black and white.
The differences between these photos are the style of the each person, the cloths they wore looks professional and poor. The poses of each person is different; Robert Cornelius took a self portrait in his backyard of his family's light fixture store and Hippolyte Bayard took a self portrait of himself sleeping as a drowned man.

I find the task very fun and interesting, I learn how to take photos with portrait angle, it was really fun taking photos whats in front of you.
It was challenging recreating the portrait I remember, because I have to remember what expression I made and what happened. I had to try make the same expression I made like before.
Some of them does look similar to the original, when I lost my hearing aid in the ride I had to look down to look for it and the family photo was me looking down which was really fun.

Portrait recreate.
I find the test very fun and memorable when I was young I used to be in my primary school and everyone else and I had to take photos of our self. My mum bought a picture of me and when I took a look of it, it remind the time in my primary school, it was really fun and I missed all my friends and deaf support teachers there, I really want to visit there some days.
It wasn't that challenging, it was fun to recreate picture when you're younger and embarrassing, sadly I look very angry and don't have cute face like when I was younger but it was really funny to compare.
It does kind of look similar, I still have my school jumper from the end of the school (end of year 6), so I used the jumper to make my primary school uniform and jumper look the same. Also I copied the pose I did from the picture to look the same.

Nico Froehlich portraits.
Nico Froehlich take street portraits about environmental and social in South London and what it's like. He frame his image by giving the image more space and make sure it have the background to show that where they are and fits the images. The background is important in his images because it shows us what South London looks like and it fits the portraits. The information give us about the place in South London and what it feels like to be in South London. Nico Froehlich took portraits of people who live in South London. The colour of the portraits affects in the pictures, the sunlight and the shade must be in the right fit to take a portrait. He make South London look like a fun place to be.
In these portraits, the colours are full, so no black white. Also the quality of the portraits are high so he took photos in good quality camera. In each photos, there are shadows and sunlight to add more detail and look more unique. He took many photos of different people, this shows how people live and their daily living. This also shows their different cultures, relationships and friendships.

I was asked to take portraits inside the school and ask people for permission to take photos of them. I find this very hard to take portraits of people and inside the school, because its very difficult to take the pictures at the right time and make sure the camera is on the right spot to take a picture. Also i found this very fun and interesting, because i learnt how to when to take a photo and
Six portraits of people in the environment.
my favourite portrait is my little brother standing behind his favourite area because in that area is where he play with his friends and hang out a lot so I thought I want to take a photo of him posing like silly which is very funny. I would like to take photos of people in my area again, because it is very fun to take portraits of someone in your local area that match the area and the person characteristics.
Tyler Mitchell's portraits.
I chose those portraits because the background and the the colour of their clothes matches very perfectly and it fits in the portraits well. Tyler Mitchell want to take photos of black people to show the community and the world that there can be photo of black people, not just only white people and inspire people to photograph people. He wants to correct the imbalance the public places where people discriminate black people, he wants to change the idea of the lack of representation.
He also want to corrupt the notion of hierarchy within art and photography. The photos he took tells us that the story in each images are from his childhood.
The colour of the portraits are full colour, so there are no black and white, monochrome. In this portraits Tyler took photos with nature and them enjoying their life and living peacefully with no problems. What makes the photos so interesting and unique are that the sunlight and shadows are added in the photos which makes it naturalistic, without using equipment for lights which is abstract.

Tyler Mitchell recreate portraits.
I found this portraits very hard to take, because you have to make sure the photos is on right time and get the colour on the background and the light on the person perfect for the image. My most successful photo is the person sitting on the stairs outside relaxing, because the colour of the sky on the background fit the person's mood and image well. The position of the camera.
Pictures in the trip to photoshops.
I took some pictures of me and my friends and shop I really like while we going to photoshops, it was really fun taking photos together and took funny photos. The trip was really fun but very tiring because we have to walk everywhere and take trains and tube.
Tyler Mitchell Portraits.
This is Tyler Mitchell's portraits, I took some pictures of his portraits and photo of someone taking photo of the picture. I found this interesting because he took photo of black people, so he can help the community that black people can be models. I really like this portraits, it really inspire me and it give me ideas to take photos of different culture and religious of different people.
Reflected Portraits.
I took self portraits of myself and people. I find this really fun because taking reflected self portraits are really interesting to take, its like taking photo of second character of the same person. The pose is standing straight and the facial expression is straight face but you can barely see the reflection of the faces. i took the angle behind the person back to make sure i got the right frame of the heads and the shoulders.
The element portraits.
The faces in the portraits are normal, not that much facial expression, just only smiles and straight face. The pose is sitting on the chair and standing with white walls to make it look natural. I like the family photo because it collaborate with a student and a teacher, this means that a student can be friends with a teacher in school and have fun time together.
Recreation of old time portraits.
In this task we have to recreate the old portraits from long ago. I recreate this portrait because i like it how the woman lied on the water and between the trees and grass. The place i recreated is at the bushes to make it look similar, the pose is the same, the woman's both hands were holding up.
However, the lighting on both faces are wrong so i need to make sure the lighting is on the right time. The ground is exposing so I need to move up the bit to cover the floor.

In these photos, the lighting is the same, we decided to copy the clothes from the old photo but we manage to make it look the same. We used the black background to get the same pictures, we tried to get the correct frame.
However, the door really distract the photo so we need to take the photo somewhere else with full black background.

Photograms.
Man Ray's photograms is a type of photograph made without a camera or a lens. Objects are placed onto light-sensitive paper and then exposed to light.
She uses random objects like combs, buttons, light bulbs, scissors, wires and she also use people.

Photogram researches.
György Kepes.
This is György Kepes photograms portraits. He used random objects to make his portraits, for example he uses strings, different colours of paint(black and white), glasses, mathematical resources, magnetics. He put his objects around the frame but some of the portraits he took, he left some space around the objects he used. He placed his materials directly on sheets of photographic paper, making compositions with shadows and reflection and other optical effects.
The difference between György Kepes photograms and Man Ray photograms are that Man Ray use all the space in the frame and cover up the spaces for the portraits and he links all the objects together and mix them together while György Kepes leaves some spaces in the frame and put the objects in one place. |

Lighting keywords.
Key light: Key light is the main source of light in a photograph or film. Key light highlight the form and dimension of on-screen subjects and allow cinematographers to control the atmosphere of a scene.
Filament lamp: filament lamp, variety of incandescent lamp (q.v) in which the light source is a fine electrical conductor heated by the passage of current.
Soft box: A soft box is a light modifier that confines light from an artificial source into a wire framed box and releases it through a layer of diffusion. Soft boxes are commonly used in photography as a soft source of light that minimizes harsh shadows.
Diffusion: Layers of translucent cloth used to make light less harsh. Measure each in.
LED lights: Easier to work with, don't get as hot. Can change the intensity on the arrows on the back. You can clip Gets - coloured acetate - with bulldog clips on to change of the light.
Two toning: Using two different colour gels on one subject for darker skin tones - best to use warm tones such as orange. there is light scale called the Kelvin scale which measure light.
Barn doors: Flaps on the side of the LED lights used to manipulate the light. Can be unscrewed and moved.
2 point system - using 2 lights, white reflects the light. If you had a white wall the light and shadows is harder to control.
Black absorbs light. If you had a black background, it will absorb the light. It is easier to make shadows with a black background.
Green background: Is not continuous light. It flashes when controlled by a trigger.
A stop of light: A stop is a doubling or halving of the amount of light let in when taking a photo.

Black background portraits.
In this portraits, the portraits are really simple, just a plain background and lighting with different colour for example green and white. This portraits are really easy to take, however I need to improve putting the lighting in the correct area and make sure there are spaces for the background in the frame to take better photos.
Lee Friedlander's portraits
Lee Friedlander is. American photographer. Friedlander evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of urban "social landscape," with many of his photographs including fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street signs.
Lee Friedlander began photographing the American social landscape in 1948. With an ability to organise a vast amount of visual information in dynamic compositions, Friedlander has made humorous and poignant images among the chaos of city life, dense natural landscape, and countless other subjects. Friedlander is also recognised for a group of self-portraits he began in the 1960s, reproduced in Self Portrait, an exploration that he turned to again in the late 1990s, and published in a monograph by Fraenkel Gallery in 2000.

Final self portraits.
In this portrait task, the photos were taken in school but only block 1, where is my photography class, I didn't took that much photos but most of them are portraits of my face. I had one idea which maybe good is i am standing below both balcony and a window on the ceiling and the photo was taken on the floor so I'm looking up. I need to improve taking more photos and make the frame have more space to make the photos look clear.
RAKIN - DESTROYS's Project.
The portraits Rakin made looks very interesting and unique, he made the person in the portraits to destroy it. RAKIN - DESTROY asked 70 musicians and visual artist to destroy their own portraits photographs originally taken by Rakin. The series of portrait photographs were radically modified to destroy the image by their subjects.
Rakin is often the subject if such criticism and this project was one way for him to respond to his critics with characteristics wit, allowing his images to be destroyed and the sale of the art works benefiting a music charity for young people.

Destroy, destruction and photocopying.
In this lesson, we did many types of destroying of our own portraits.
photo-cut image.
We cut our own image and we placed the bits in different places and we use different colours in the printer. This one is easy to destroy and simple.
I used pink and blue because it simple and it matches. I had no time so I just cut my photo into random pieces and place it in different places mixed with other pieces.

Photogram - destroy.
In this task, I used the photogram to destroy my photo. I used some small objects on my photo, which cover my face but you can still see my face, however I want to use objects that can block and cover some part of the photo not like all see-through objects. The photogram have good composite.
However, my photograms fail because the photo doesn't show up in the liquids so I need to try again and again to get the right image.

Photopea
In this task, I used a website called Photopea, which you can edit your own photo, so i destroy my photo by using liquor which moves the image like a water wave. I also use blur to add more edits. This is easy and simple to edit my photo but sometimes you need to redo the edit when u trying new things which can ruin your edits. |
Cynotype.
In this task, we used cynotype to destory my own portraits which use ink and you can use any small objects to place on the photo so I used a circle object and strings covering my my own face. Maybe next time i will add some one or two more objects but small ones on my cynotype not like the circle objects or big ones. This task seems easy and simple but it takes long so it took some lessons to make my own cynotype. |
30 photos.
I don't use anything in all my photos but use one thing. I use objects such as bottle, bottle wrap, playing cards book and glasses that I painted it white so you can't see my eyes. In most of all the photos, I cover my face with those objects I used, I also edit some of the photos with adjusting the brightness, etc. I also took some photos in my garden with trees and use my torch to add some lightening since it is dark outside.
ZIQIANQIAN.
ZIQIANQIAN takes self portraits of part of her body and using simple object like fruits, flowers, clothes, chairs, mirror.
She uses translucent glass and use one or two objects on top, all her portraits are simple and minimal. The background is just one colour and really simple, it's not really detail or complicated. The meaning behind these portraits where some people are peaceful mind and alone and also like about themselves and have their confidence without worrying about anything. All of her work is self portrait, in her work, she combines her body, plants, and mirror images, constantly exploring the balanced state of peaceful coexistence between human and nature. The style that she use is simple and use different colours to match the background and the portrait. The camera position are on the ground and shoulder levels also make the space big to fit the background in the frame , the genre of the portraits is still live. |
There are different types of photography, she uses portraiture and constructed landscapes to create a unique style of photography.
This portrait, its shows that the meaning behind these portraits where some people are peaceful mind and alone and also like about themselves and have their confidence without worrying about anything. Self portraits.
In this task, I use small and big mirror to take self portraits, however it really doesn't look good so I need to improve taking proper mirror self portrait, so maybe I could use simple background with just one colour and add some lighting. But it still look good in some portraits.
Photographer research.
Lee Friedlander
Lee Friedlander is an American photographer. Friedlander takes photos in his times using old camera which tells us that it is in the old time. He takes photo of himself with nature like he take photos of himself in the trees. He also takes street photos in shops and entertainment shops. In his portraits he used light on his face which tells us about himself.
He also use black and white camera, which is old camera back in time, he used mirror from outside the shop and his own mirror in his home and use object like a mask.

Self portrait inspired by Ziqianqian.
In all of the portraits I took are mostly face-hidden with small mirror and I use my big mirror which can reflect from the small mirror. I use simple clothes with the same colour so I chose black. I used small mirror in all portraits because it is easy and simple to take, I also place the mirror in different places such as ceiling, wall, on my hand, floor, shelf. I used my room so I need to move my stuff to the side to make clean and simple for portraits.
I was inspired by the artist Ziqianqian, she takes self portraits but she cover her face in most of all her photos. She also use one colour clothes and use mirrors, so i chose one colour which is black since the background is white so it matches.
I want to improve the portraits by using different objects instead of mirror so maybe like plants, clothes, something that cover my face. I like my portrait where i put the mirror on the ceiling and cover my face with my hand.

School self portrait.
In-school portraits, I don't really do anything that much but use mirror to make it simple as possible, I take photos of my friend in the big white box and him holding mirror on his eye leaving a half of his face so you can his other face. I also took of him in the dark area using the mirror as well reflecting his face.
3RD photoshoot
I found this task very fun and interesting, because this is my first time using edit from Photoshop, which the photography teacher told about these three photoshop apps on my phone (Photoshop: express, photoshop: camera). I use some objects in each photos to cover my face and some of them you can see my face, I use broken mirror which i accidentally broke it so I use some broken pieces and stick on my mirror with my blue tack.
I really like the photo of myself holding the LED light and i edited by liquifying my face off and my hands which left is my head and the light. I need to improve taking different photos in different areas

Assessment plan.
In this assessment, my plans are one my photo will be a mirror outside and inside school about the nature and the climate change that is happening now for example construction sites, cars etc. Another photo of my plan is just only two hands holding each other or reaching for each other with the sky or nature as the background maybe it will be sunset so make it plain as simple, this photo means a couple or friendship or relationship with your family or anyone that you love, you and them need to stay together no matter what even argument s or mistakes you or them made. Another photo will be is a LED light in the dark and myself standing/walking.

Exam practice.
Lee Friedlander often use black and white colour however this portraiture isn't that traditional but I really like the way he takes photo of people which represents the area. This person is confused which way does he need to go and it shows the question sign on the wall which present the way the person feels and think. The person poses as he look like he doesn't know where to go. The camera position is long shot so that the wall, the signs and people and in the portrait which can present the person really well.
